Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige *Spoiler Free* Review

Goodreads summary

First kisses sometimes wake slumbering princesses, undo spells, and spark happily ever afters.

Mine broke Bale.

Seventeen-year-old Snow has spent her life locked in Whittaker Psychiatric—but she isn’t crazy. And that’s not the worst of it. Her very first kiss proves anything but innocent…when Bale, her only love, turns violent.

Despite Snow knowing that Bale would never truly hurt her, he is taken away—dashing her last hope for any sort of future in the mental ward she calls home. With nowhere else to turn, Snow finds herself drawn to a strange new orderly who whispers secrets in the night about a mysterious past and a kingdom that’s hers for the taking—if only she can find her way past the iron gates to the Tree that has been haunting her dreams.

Beyond the Tree lies Algid, a land far away from the real world, frozen by a ruthless king. And there too await the River Witch, a village boy named Kai, the charming thief Jagger, and a prophecy that Snow will save them all.

Our main character‘s name is Snow. To be honest I don’t know if I like or dislike Snow’s character. She is different than other characters and I like that about her, she don’t sees herself as a hero and is actually very selfish. She is very fixated on getting back to thing she is familiar with, and that isn’t a bad thing, but in the position she is, I don’t know if that is the best thing to do. What did irritate me about her a lot was her constantly whining for her Bale. I don’t like the idea of them being the cannon romance, not at all. In the first chapter of the book is said that Bale broke her wrists, and since then they are separate from each other. And still she loves him?!

Also during the book Snow meets two other male characters and with both she seems to have feelings for them and have the urge to kiss them, while she still loves her Bale to death (I hope this weren’t any spoilers, but it says something about her character to me). And I don’t like it at all.

There isn’t that much shown of Bale in the book, so I can’t really tell anything about his character.

The two male characters I was talking about were Kai and Jagger. About Kai I feel normal, he is a distant boy, but he wears his emotions on his face. And he isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Kai really cares for Gerde, his sister but not by blood, and does everything in his power to protect her.

Jagger is a thief, but a very charming thief in my opinion. He is a bit of a flirt but he is honest about his emotions even though he tells lies when it will help him. Of all the characters, I liked him the most. He was caring and funny, but also did what he thought was good for himself.

I won’t say that this book was written poorly, but I have seen better. What I liked about the book was the world it was set in Algid, too bad there wasn’t that much writing put into the world building, I would have liked to see more of this world. And I liked the main plot of this story and the idea the story was created with. For me there was a lot happening in the story and it all turned out convenient enough for Snow, but the writing was all over the place. Then this was happening and then this. There were so many things happening, that it was hard to follow why they were happening or how it was possible that they were happening. Snow was going from one place to another in the time spend of a page without a clear explanation for me how that happened.

Now I did like the ending much more than the rest of the book. This time was spend with a certain group and I really liked it. In my opinion Snow made the most character development in this section of the book. I saw a bit of the ending coming, but also a part not and that surprised me in a good way.

I am a big fan of Frozen, which is also based of the Snow Queen. So my expectations for this book were pretty high. And too bad it didn’t live up to it. I really had a hard time going through the book until I reached the end of the book, that part was good to go through but still not the best. But I think I will pick up the second book when it comes out, in the hope that that one will be better than this one.

And because I still have hope that the story will be better, I will give Stealing Snow and overall rating of 3 Stars.

Has any of you read Stealing Snow? And what about Dorothy Must Die? I am hesitating to pick this one up now after I read Stealing Snow. So if you have read Dorothy Must Die, I would like to know if it is worth picking up.

  1. I can understand how irritating it can be to follow the main character who whines.. I haven’t read any books by this author yet. I requested this book but got rejected.. Guess I don’t feel bad for not getting the ARC 🙂 Great review!
