This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab *Spoiler Free* Review

Young Adult, Fantasy and Dystopia

“There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives.”

Kate: Kate is a character who at a first glance is very fierce and badass, but when you get to know her and get to see her thoughts, you get to know that she can also be very soft and that there is a reason why she acts a certain way. I really liked this about Kate’s character and she really interesting to read from.

August: August is just a sweet guy who wants to life a normal life, which unfortunately isn’t possible for him. He struggles with what he is and what he has to do, and learns the hard way that there is no other way than to do a certain part for the rest of his life.

I really love the writing. The chapters are short, which makes you fly though the book without you even noticing it. But even though the chapters are short, it isn’t difficult to connect with the characters. I also enjoyed the world of this book, in my opinion it is so well thought out and so well explained that I had no questions about the world and it felt really to me.

The ending was nerve wrecking, to me it felt so intense and there was a plot twist I didn’t expected. I am still wondering what is going to happen from there on, but I hope to see that in the next installment in this duology.

I already had high expectations for this book, and it went above that. It took me a few chapters to get into this story, but after I was into it, I was excited to continue on. The character feel very really and are relatable. I am really excited to continue on and see what more surprising and interesting things will happen in this world.

  • No romance!!
  • Great friendship
  • Great characters
  • Short chapters

  • It took me a few pages to get into the book

Overall rating: 4.5/5 stars
