The nation of Panem, formed from a post-apocalyptic North America, is a country that consists of a wealthy Capitol region surrounded by 12 poorer districts. Early in its history, a rebellion led by a 13th district against the Capitol resulted in its destruction and the creation of an annual televised event known as the Hunger Games. In punishment, and as a reminder of the power and grace of the Capitol, each district must yield one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 through a lottery system to participate in the games. The ‘tributes’ are chosen during the annual Reaping and are forced to fight to the death, leaving only one survivor to claim victory.

When 16-year-old Katniss’s young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives. , she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.”

Katniss: The book is told from Katniss’ point of view, so you basically get to know her the best. You get to know her feelings and motivations to best. And so far I really enjoy her character. The thing that she does for her little sister I respect as a big sister myself, and I can relate to that. I am curious to see how Katniss will develop throughout the series.

Peeta: Peeta is very smart. When everyone is panicking and thinking about themselves. He thinks about Katniss and a way for him and her to gain more sponsors. So far I enjoy his character, but I also don’t really know what to think of him.

I enjoyed the writing of The Hunger Games. I love the world building, the way everything is explained and descripted but still not too many information dump on you. I also really enjoy the complexity of the characters, all the characters are well developed.

I already knew about the ending of this book because I have watched the movies up till Mockingjay Part 1. So I don’t know the ending for the series yet. But still, even though I knew the ending to this book, I really was into it. I listened to this book so fast and I really was into it and the ending.

I started off with reading this book and after that I got a subscription to Storytel, I started listening to the audiobook for this book. I enjoyed the voice which was telling the story to me. And overall I really enjoyed this book even though I already knew what was going to happen because I have watched the movie before. I loved Katniss as the main character and getting to know her and her motivation because it is writing in first person.

Overall rating: 3/5 stars
